My Favorite Airline

I love Singapore Airlines. They are the role model for many competitors like Malaysian, Emirates and Cathay Pacific. Many national airlines, such as QANTAS, British Airways and Garuda Indonesia are so scared of Singapore Airlines that it lobbied to restrict access and limit landing slots to Singapore Airlines in their home market. That's probably why the superjumbo Airbus 380 is important to Singapore Air's expansion strategy. By the way, I always fly them whenever I can and never have much to complain with the way they pamper me even in Economy Class. I wish I can fly them within the US too, sigh.

Well, the airline got into my screening radar with the recent run, nearly 50% since September 06. And with PE multiple of 17, it looks attractive for an industry leader with a lot of room for growth. However, I need to do more research on how it is coping with the advent of low cost carrier in the region. The Airline seems to be involved in costly arms race to upgrade service with other premium carriers like Emirates and Cathay Pacific. The airline is committed to become the service quality leader and hoping customers will pay [1], but would customers pay $7000 for a business class seat and $1,700 for a coach seat from US to Singapore, when acceptable alternatives are available from other carriers for 50% less.

However I changed my mind about wanting to buy the stock after seeing this chart, and how correlated the stock is to the Straits times Index (Singapore Air accounts for about .45% of STI [2]). I might be better off buying a Singapore or regional Index fund like EWS (it has about 4.5% holding in Singapore Air).

I am going to do a little more homework in this, but I am guessing the recent run in Singapore Air stock was mostly due to broader regional market movement rather than intrinsic to the company.
