Nice overview of the risk factors for EMC + Company analysis summation, twostardav. I would be caregul with the POV. Do you have any sources that corroborate on the topics you raised?--Wikister 20:43, 19 February 2007 (PST)
Thanks for the comments Wikister. I have sourced the market size and removed the 'needs citation' message. btw - Hitachi Data Systems is owned by Hitachi, LTD Japan-- it's an ADR symbol HIT - do we track ADR's in here? If so we should create a link-- i'll defer to your judgement on that. Also, NetApp is a big player in the space. I will try to add some content if I can find the time. How does one set up a company profile? No profile for HPQ?
I get the need to cite the market size, which I did, but is citation really needed that EMC is 'a leader' in storage. That's not likely to be challenged is it, any more than saying Pfizer is a leader in big pharma? I could see being called out for using so-called 'weasel words' but is Valuewiki really as pedantic as Wikipedia? I don't fully understand Valuewiki's policies yet so maybe you could direct me. I will of course do whatever the community requires but ask that you consider the merits and drawbacks of Wikipedia's policies as applied to an investment site.
Okay-- i'm done-- i hate Mediawiki editing conflicts! Twostardav
- Thank you Twostardav, I fixed the internal links to HIT and HPQ. I think the spirit of ValueWiki, as I see the posting of Jon and Zach, the founders, revolves around verifiability, as does Wikipedia. But one should not feel ashamed of making bold statements, as the sources can be added later by others. It is pity the Wikibon article doesn't its sources. I wonder what they are.
- I also adapted the header from Wikipedia, and next will bring some info in the SEC 10-K filling. I plan also to put in headers and more for HIT, HPQ and the other competitors. You are welcome to contribute to those article as well.
- P.S> You might want to sign your postings using the sign button, the second from the left in the toolbar above the editing window.--Wikister 16:24, 21 February 2007 (PST)
- Nicely said, Twostardav! And really great edit work Wikister. Between your contributions, I think the EMC article is looking good.
- TwoStarDav, as far as POV, I think there were a few evaluative statements like "EMC's execution has been excellent..." But in general, I wholeheartedly agree that we don't want ValueWiki to drown in byzantine Wikipedia rules! Thanks TwoStarDav for getting the ball rolling on this article. Thanks User:Wikister for improving my contribution-- your work is good and it's a pleasure collaborating with you. Okay-- it looks like I totally misunderstood the approach and I apologize for that. We're also consuming valuable real estate designed for opinion and original research but I don't know where else to have this discussion. Wikibon is a site for original research Wikister, as is IDC, Gartner, Forrester and others. They are just closed and expensive whereas Wikibon is open and free-- I don't have to ask which you prefer, I'm sure. But Jon-- I'm still confused on what this site is all about. You definitely imply there's a better way than high priced Wall Street analysts and as a former high priced analyst I think the Valuewiki community would benefit from my (and others') methodology-based opinions, independent thought and original research. That's unique. If I want free investment profiles I can go to Google or a dozen other sites. I'm interested in contributing the opinions and original research which made me rich...but want to make sure its what you're after and I'm playing by the rules. I wish you the best with this site-- it's a great idea. --Twostardav 18:15, 21 February 2007 (PST)
- Hey all, I added a leadership section and small history section to the EMC article.
- Twostardav, I responded about paid analysts on your talk page. FWIW, I used to be a financial analyst as well!
- By the way, don't worry about "wasting real estate"! If this message board gets too cluttered, we'll archive it and start a fresh one. All of wikipedia takes up only 4.5 Gigs of storage space - that's half an iPod. So feel free to write as much as you want - we won't waste space! Thank you for your kind words on ValueWiki. WMWare IPO
I want to include in the article the developments related to EMC's decision to do a partial IPO of WMware in the Summer. There is a lot of relevance to the topic of virtualization, virtual servers and appliances that would enrich our articles on the companies in the sector, starting with EMC. I found this blog on the subject: Virtualization for everyone, plus articles on the IPO: here, here, here, here and here. Plus interesting discussion at itjungle.com and crn.com, as well as interesting blogging work at illuminata.com and brianberliner.com and vmblog.com, plus this irate shareholder, yet more this on the competitive threat from Hitachi. It is a lot and your help would be fully appreciated.--Wikister 13:27, 22 February 2007 (PST)
