Michael Dell Returns
So today (February 1) Michael Dell, the company's founder announced that he would take over from Kevin Rollins as CEO. The stock Jumped briefly to $25.39 in early trading then fell back to around $24.20 (The stock closed at $24.22 on January 31). So I guess the market briefly expected Michael Dell to bring Steve Jobs type turnaround at the company, before later in the day analysts pointed out that Dell is operating in a cutthroat commoditized PC market and Dell still has a lot of problems to solve. [1]. Dell also said that he would not change the company's strategy of selling PCs direct to customer. This would be interesting given HP's resurgence by aggressively selling Laptops and PC's through retial channels like Circuit City and Best Buy, a strategy which was thought to be a dead end given the prior success of Dell. So I think most market players have expected the change would be coming for a while. I would love to hear more comments/opinions about this issue and what directions HPA and Dell would take next.
