Singapore Airlines, the national flag carrier of Singapore is a major international airline, operating from its main hub in Singapore Changi Airport, flying to 65 cities in 35 countries worldwide. Risks

Like other airlines, Singapore airline faces significant risks in Jet fuel price and foreign currency rate fluctuations. For the financial year ended 31 March 2006, 65% of total revenue (2004-05: 68%) and 69% of total operating expenses (2004-05: 64%) are denominated in foreign currency (non Singapore $). [1]

Operationally, the Airline is facing stronger competition from new low cost regional airlines like Air-Asia, Valuair and tiger Air. Recently, some low cost carriers like Air Asia and Oasis airlines have also planned to enter long haul route. Singapore Airlines have responded by upgrading their service and offering more space and comfort in all service classes, however this strategy reducing capacity per plane. Singapore Airlines hope to be able to charge premium price and increase utilization through this strategy. However, other global airlines that operate in SIA's routes like Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific, Emirates and British Airways are also upgrading their services.
