Background

Co-founders Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky invented the Pilot Palm Pilot, one of the first "connected organizers," a PDA that synchronized with desktop applications like Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes. A software developer of almost any skill level could create applications for it, and thousands did. Later, the founders of Palm invented the one of the first 'smartphones,' -- essentially a Palm Pilot that made phone calls.[2]

In 1995, the founders of Palm sold the company to modem giant U.S. Robotics. U.S. Robotics was acquired by 3Com in June 1997. In 1998, the founders left the company and launched Handspring, which eventually developed the first mass-market smartphone the Treo. 3Com made Palm an independent, publicly traded company in March 2000. In January 2002, Palm spun out its software division as an independent company called PalmSource. In August 2003, the company merged with Handspring and renamed itself PalmOne. In April 2005, the company, now called PalmOne, spent US$ 30 million to buy the "Palm" trademark from PalmSource, and changed its name back to Palm. In December 2006, Palm paid US$ 44 million for access to the Palm OS source code it used to own so it could make its own software again.[2]

Takeover rumors

PALM, was rumored during late 2006 and early 2007, to be in process of been acquired by a more highly capitalized parent, possibly NOK, or a private equity group.[3] To that date, all recurring rumors of a sale of PALM had been untrue. In June 2006, there was a rumor that PALM and RIMM would announced a merger of their own.[4][5]
