Risks
- DivX revenue is concentrated on relatively short term licensing agreements with other companies. These tend to be one - two years in length and must continually be renegotiated.
- DivX format may face competition from other industry leaders such as Microsoft and Apple
- 15% of DivX's revenue is earned from installing the Google toolbar when users download their software. As they achieve market penetration for their player, this revenue could be threatened by less people downloading their software and by less people opting into the Google toolbar because they already have it.
- DivX has been used as a tool to pirate material and share it over the internet. They could end up being sued by the Hollywood studios, although a more realistic possibility would be that Hollywood refuses to license their content to DivX as punishment. If Hollywood refuses to get in bed with DivX, they could face an uphill battle for the adoption of their codec, particularly once all content is digital distributed.
