ALCOA INC (AA)
From ValueWiki
Alcoa (AA) is the world’s leader in aluminum smelting capacity and the world’s second largest producer of aluminum, behind RusAl. Alcoa leads the world in alumina production and capacity. It is headquartered on the North Shore of Pittsburgh and has operations in 43 countries. It is followed closely by a former subsidiary, Alcan, a Canadian-based company in Montreal, who is the third-leading producer behind Alcoa, but in terms of sales Alcan is ahead of Alcoa. In addition to aluminium products, Alcoa also makes and markets consumer brands including Reynolds Wrap foil and plastic wrap, Baco household wraps, and Alcoa wheels. Among Alcoa’s other businesses are vinyl siding, closures, fastening systems, precision castings, and electrical distribution systems for cars.[1]

Takeover Rumors
On its February 13, 2007 edition, the London Times newspaper reported that the Anglo-Australian mining giants BHP Billiton (BHP) and Rio Tinto (RTP) had separate undisclosed plans for a US$ 40 billion takeover of Alcoa and that Alcoa was itself considering its own future and had drawn a list of potential new chief executives, including some of BHP Billiton.[3] In New York after-hours trading, the stock climbed almost 10%, to US$ 36 and settled at US$ 35 at the day's close.
Pundit Jim Cramer said the market rumors of a bid for Alcoa make sense because the last year or two has shown that "undermanaged companies" in the metals sector have gotten takeout deals.[4]. He also said that Rio Tinto will buy Alcoa and not BHP Billiton. "Everybody recognizes that Alcoa has been a country club and it's time for it to change," he said.[5]
