Company History
Aeterna Zentaris was formed as a result of 2003 merger between Quebec City based Aeterna, Inc. of Canada and Munich based Zentaris AG of Germany. The company is currently focused on developing and commercializing biopharmaceutical products in endocrine and oncology therapy.
In January 2007, the company completed the spin off its Active Ingredients & Specialty Chemicals, and Health and Nutrition divisions into a separate publicly traded company, Atrium Biotechnologies ATB:CA, first announced in September 2006 [1]

Cetrotide [2]
Cetrotide® was the first luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) antagonist treatment approved for in vitro fertilization. It is administered to women to prevent premature ovulation in order to increase fertility success rate. Developed in cooperation with Medicine Nobel Prize Winner Professor Andrew Schally, of Tulane University in New Orleans, it was launched in Europe in 1999 and in the United States in 2001. Cetrotide® is approved in more than 80 countries.
Cetrotide® is the only treatment in its class that offers a choice of two highly effective dose strengths (0.25 mg or 3 mg) which enable precise control. Due to its immediate onset of action, Cetrotide® offers superior benefits over other forms of in vitro fertilization treatments since it require a shorter treatment time, involves fewer injections and causes less side effects.
Impavido [3]
Impavido® is the first oral drug for the treatment of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis. Impavido® has been proven to be highly effective and less toxic than current therapies. According to the World Health Organization, the disease is endemic in 88 countries with nearly 350 million people at risk. If untreated, visceral leishmaniasis can result in death within 6 months to 2 years. There are more than one million new cases per year of cutaneous leishmaniasis and an estimated prevalence of 12 million people already infected.

Cetrorelix
Cetrorelix has the same active ingredient as [www.fda.gov/cder/foi/label/2000/21197lbl.pdf Cetrotide] which has been approved in US, Europe and Japan for In-Vivo Fertilization application. The compound has been shown to be relatively safe for short term dosing and do not exhibit many of the flare-up side effects related to LHRH agonists. The company and its partners are developing the drug for endometriosis and BPH. Solvay has the worldwide right ex Japan for Endometriosis and will assume development cost for this indication. After the conclusion of Phase II, AEZS regained rights for BPH indication from Solvay and plan to continue development for this indication by itself or with new partner. In Japan, Shionogi and Nippon Kayaku own the right to all indications and aggressively pursuing development for BPH.
Perifosine
Perifosine is a novel orally bioavailable AKT inhibitor in clinical trials. Phase I trial showed that the drug is relatively safe and well tolerated. Currently there are multiple perifosine phase I/II trials ongoing as monotheraphy or in combination with radiotherapy or other chemotherapy. Currently the drug has not proven itself as a monotheraphy agent, as negative result were observed in androgen independent prostate cancer and untreated/locally advanced soft tissue sarcoma. The drug is curretnly being developed in colaboration with Keryx Biopharmaceuticals (KERX).
Ozarelix
Ozarelix is second generation LHRH antagonist. It is licensed to Spectrum Pharmaceuticals (SPPI) for North America and India. The drug is highly potent and long lasting. Phase I trial showed that even at minimum dose Ozarelix suppressed testosterone level down to castration and showed dose dependency in suppression duration. It is currently developed for treatment of prostate cancer patients needing castration and 2nd line BPH treatment.
